How to Cut Acrylic Plexiglass Sheets by Hand

Many customers asked how to manually cut the acrylic sheet , Because most of them do not have special acrylic cutting tools on their hands. The followings are some idea of the manual cutting method of acrylic sheet, hoping to help you.

How to cut acrylic sheet by hand - cutting with a hook knife

Electric mill can be used, but the best with sawtooth stainless steel saw blade, and low speed is required due to risk of melt at high speed. And for acrylic, a curved saw can be used better, a hacksaw is fine as well, but its cutting area is larger.

Compared with above them, cutting with a hook knife is one of the easiest methods to cut acrylic sheets or boards. The process doesn’t require the use of a power saw or any other heavy-duty electrical equipment. 

The process requires only the following steps:

- Press a ruler on the acrylic sheet and mark the area of the plastic sheet you want to cut.

- Use a scoring knife to cut a narrow groove in the acrylic sheeting

- Scoring preferably works on sheets less than ¼” (6.35mm) in thickness.

- Place the sheet over a hard edge with groove-side up.

- Clamp the sheet if needed.

- Bend the overhang side of the sheet, press down with your hands, with quick and even motion.

As the sheet bends, the groove will deepen as the crack propagates throughout the acrylic sheet. Bending will result in the separation of two pieces of plexiglass sheet with relatively straight and clean edges.
